7. Albert Einstein’s stolen brain In 1955, after Einstein’s death, Thomas Harvey conducted an autopsy. During the autopsy, he removed Einstein's brain. Instead of putting in back, he decided to take it with him for study. He didn’t have permission to though. Days later, Harvey had managed to convince Einstein’s son that keeping his brain could help benefit for studying. 8. Dying of hydration It is actually possible to die from drinking too much water. 11/22/2019 0 Comments The Great Emu WarHearing something like, the great emu war, you would probably think, “oh wow, this sounds ridiculous. This definitely isn’t a real war.” But guess what! It is a real thing. It was against emus and Australia, and here’s how it went down. After World War One, Australia was having problems finding employment for returning veterans. Their solution? Offering land and money to over 5,000 veterans to grow wheat. With this great offer, the new farmers had begun to work. Australia was struggling. With a drought and the Great Depression, they thought surely nothing worse could come. But boy were they wrong. Looking for water, a horde of 20,000 invaded. The emus had found the wheat that the farmers were growing, and feasted away. With devastating wheats and torn down fences. On November 2nd, 1932, the military traveled to Campion where about 50 emus had been seen. They were sent with giant machine guns, since they thought it would be effective. The birds were a hard target, due to how fast they could move. The birds were out of gun range so they decided to plan an ambush instead. It was very ineffective due to how far the emus were. Two days later, they tried again. Major Meredith has prepared for an ambush near a local dam where 1,000 emus had been spotted. This time, they waited until they were in range. But there were still mostly unsuccessful. They had only managed to kill 12 emus out of the total thousand. All of the others emus scattered before the military had a chance to shoot them. Within the following days, Major Meredith had decided to move further south were more emus had been reported. Within 6 days into the war, 2,500 rounds of ammunition had been fired. Emus casualties were not great, and the number of birds killed were unclear. Different accounts claimed different amounts, therefore they did not announce an official number. There was a second attempt to get rid of the emus, and this time it was more successful. Once again, several different claims were made. Such as, claims that 986 birds were killed, and another saying that 2500 birds were killed. Soon after, word of the war were spread, and people were not happy. In the year that followed, farmers requested military assistance, but the government refused.
In the end, the military never really won the war. They never managed to get rid of the emus, and they occasionally just kept coming. So, it is safe to say, that the emus won the war. 11/11/2019 0 Comments The Election of 1800Within recent events, we have now received a new president of the United States. Who is our new president you may ask? Thomas Jefferson, the very same man who spent five years in France during the Revolutionary War, and basically completely missed out on it. Originally, right hand man Alexander Hamilton was going to participate in running for president against Jefferson, but after publishing “The Reynolds” his legacy and reputation was ruined and he has since been missing in action and was unable to participate. Instead, Senator Aaron Burr had taken his place. Burr and Hamilton have had quite a history, so people thought it would be very interesting to see how it would play out. In order to run for president, both Burr and Jefferson had to resign from their previous positions. With Burr as a member of the Senate, and Jefferson the Secretary of State, the loser in the running would be in a tight spot. Lately, Jefferson has been locally known as a Francophile and people believe that his chances of winning the election are low. Burr on the other hand, has been having better chances. New Yorkers, and others in the North are liking the chances that Burr has at winning. He has been going door to door around New York talking to politicians, giving advice, charming husband and wives, and using his infamous phrase, “Talk less, smile more” to help get more people on his side. Reports have said that Burr and Hamilton had been seen having quiet, private conversations. Hamilton wore a face of frustration and tiredness, while Burr only talked about his tactics for winning. “It makes sense that Hamilton would be frustrated and tired,” says owner of the local bakery, John Philips. “He is still recovering from the pamphlet he published weeks ago, and several civilians have been pestering him about the election. Bothering him by asking him who he is going to vote for.” A couple weeks later, the results had been announced. With every man having had voted, the results were, a tie. Yes, somehow Burr and Jefferson managed to both have an equal amount of votes. This of course, stunned the politicians in the room. While they were struggling to think of a way to resolve the conflict, Alexander Hamilton entered the room. Turns out, he had yet to vote, and whoever he would vote for, would officially win and become president. Everyone was aware of the fact that Hamilton and Jefferon were absolute rivals in politics, therefore that led everyone to believe that Hamilton would vote for Burr. But in the end, it was Jefferson who Hamilton voted for. His reasoning? Jefferson had beliefs, while Burr either had none, or were unknown. So in the end, our new president of the United States is Thomas Jefferson, with Aaron Burr as his Vice President. This article is an example of Yellow Journalism
10/28/2019 0 Comments How To Make Up A Good Scary StoryImagine you are sitting in a circle with all your friends on Halloween night. Everyone is taking turns going around and making up their own scary stories. Eventually, it gets to you, but you're having trouble making up your own story. What do you do? Remember these steps and you’ll have the perfect spooky story for spooky season. Step One Step Two
Create an interesting storyline. You have to have an interesting storyline, in order to keep your audience engrossed. Try using a real-life scenario to help scare your audience. It will give them a sense that it could be possible, and they’ll begin to overthink the possibility, inducing the intensity. You could use fictional characters, but to maybe increase the scare, use the audience as characters. Step Three Create a background story for your main character. Give them a past story. You can use this to help your story. For example, you can use a trauma from the main character’s past to help with the antagonist, and it can help create a more creepy mood to the story. Step Four Consider adding a twist to your story. A plot twist can always surprise your audience. Plot twist can be several different things. From, the butter was poisoned and caused Sally to die, or the main character had a double personality disorder and they were actually the murderer all along. Find something that's sure to throw your audience off guard. Step Five Have a good ending. You can make it as dramatic, or calming as you’d like. You can make a happy ending, or really depressing make you wanna cry because the dog just died ending. You can also end the story with a cliffhanger. That’ll give you the option to give continue the story another day, or you can just leave it that way forever and disappoint your audience. 10/15/2019 0 Comments Five Creepy and Disturbing Cold Cases.Black Dahlia
Elizabeth Short was a 22 year old woman in Los Angeles, California, working as a waitress, hoping one day to become a movie star actress. In January 1947, however, things would take a drastic turn for Elizabeth. She was brutally murdered, her body had been cut in half and severely injured. Her body was found nude and posed by a local female resident on January 15, 1947. Short’s body had also been drained of her own blood, and was scrubbed clean. The murderer was never found and Elizabeth’s cold case had been nicknamed “the Black Dahlia”. The Chicago Tylenol Murders A total of seven people had suffered from the same fate starting in 1982. The victims were six adults, and one twelve year old girl. Each victim, shortly before their deaths, had taken an Extra Strength Tylenol pill. Soon after, each victim had dropped dead. For the next 20 years, the case had been unsolved, and nobody had a clue about what had happened. They had finally found that the capsules had been laced with cyanide. After investigation, they found that a total of 10 bottles had been poisoned. The person or people who did this was never caught. Who Put Bella Down the Wych Elm?On April 18, 1943, three boys were hunting for birds nests in trees when one boy climbed a Wych Elm and looked into knothole when he saw a skull with hair on it. The boys hadn’t immediately reported the finding, for they had been trespassing. But soon after, one finally did. After investigations, most of the skeleton, a wedding ring, and a shoe were found. In the skull’s mouth, there had been crumpled taffeta. Forensic investigation revealed that the body had been smothered inside the tree, almost immediately after death. No one knows what happened to her and rumors have floated around, but to this day, the story will remain cold. The Dyatlov PassIn the 1950’s, nine experienced hikers decide to take a trip and ski in the former Soviet Union. They never returned and they were thought to have disappeared, but months later, all nine of their bodies were found dead. One body was even missing their tongue and both eyes were missing as well. Investigators stated that their deaths were caused by an “unknown compelling force”. A movie in 2013 called Devil’s Pass was released and the plot was based on the incident. The Highway of Tears The highway of tears is a 724 km length of Yellowhead Highway 16 in British Columbia where many women have either disappeared, or have been found murdered. There have been 18 cases, starting from 1969 to 2006. 10 of the 18 victims were Indigenous. The killers have never been found, and information on them is low. Most people are aware of the damage that is being done to our planet. An estimated 14 billion pounds of trash are being dumped into our world’s oceans every year. Throughout time, that number will only increase. Plastic bags and other plastic waste can kill as many as one million marine animals and birds every year. So many people ask, what can we do to get rid of all the trash? Some people suggest burning our trash, or just simply recycling. But what if we send our trash into the sun? Yes, it is possible, but should we actually do it? There are many risks involved, and they could be harmful to our environment.
Gravity plays a big role in this part. To send a rocket containing our trash into space, you would have to define the pull of gravity at such an accelerated rate, which can be very pricey. But once you do, your rocket is now in Earth’s orbit and is now orbiting the sun at 30 km/s (67,000 mph). In order to launch something into the sun, you would have to lose 30 km/s and travel the distance of 150 million km (93 million miles). Doesn’t seem that bad? Well, in order to leave our solar system entirely, you would only have to gain another 12 km/s of speed to leave. But say you manage to figure out how to route the spaceship correctly and its ready to head to the sun. But there’s one step in between, launching. Launching the spacecraft into space could go horribly wrong, but it could also go the right way. Say it goes wrong, now you have millions of tons of trash hurling back down to the earth. What’s if it were nuclear waste? Well now you have tons of nuclear waste polluting our water and air. Humanity could possibly be wiped out from that. But say you define all those odds. You find a way to launch your spacecraft with failure and its now heading towards the sun. But what about all of the rest of the trash still on earth? An Ariane 5 rocket carries a payload of up to 7000 kg (15,432 pounds) to a stable point in Earth’s orbit. This is possible at a cost of around $200 million. The entire world produces about 2.6 trillion pounds of trash a year. Meaning we would have to launch about 168 million Ariane 5’s every year to keep the globe garbage-free. That’s a lot of money. $33 quadrillion per year actually. So maybe, if we didn’t have to face all of these problems, we could launch all of our trash into the sun. But until scientists figure that out, we are stuck without the option of launching our garbage into the sun. What can you do to help get rid of garbage? Every student at Bradford Prep wears the same uniform and/or follow the same dress code. But what about the staff? All staff can be seen in articles of clothing students don’t have the option to wear. Some students may think, “Why do teachers get to wear whatever they want?”. Well, it doesn’t exactly work like that. You may not think it, but teachers have to follow a pretty strict policy as well.
In reality, the student uniform policy could possibly be less strict as the teachers. Don’t believe me? Do you like to wear shorts? Well teachers aren't allowed to wear them. According to the Bradford Prep Employee Handbook, shorts are not permitted to be worn, excluding PE staff. Other rules include: • Shirts must cover the waistband or be tucked into the waistband of pants/skirt with no midriff or lower back exposed at any time • No leggings, stretchy pants, pajama pants or tight pants may be worn unless they are under a dress, skirt or shirt that is no shorter than 4” above the knee. They may not be worn with just a shirt or sweater • Shirts or blouses should not have low necklines or low backs, no underclothing may show • Spaghetti strap and strapless tops are not allowed, unless worn under a shirt or sweater that is not removed. • Jeans of any color are not permitted for staff members unless otherwise designated by the Head of School. Dressy jeans may be worn on Fridays. • No jeans or pants with holes in them. • Absolutely no underclothing may show. Front office staff and admin should be dressed professionally on a daily basis, always prepared for parent interactions. The bottom hem of dresses and skirts must be at minimum no more than 4” above the knee whether standing or sitting. • Spaghetti strap dresses or sundress style dresses are not permitted. • Shoes: Sandals and slides are allowed. Casual flip-flops, house slippers or any foot covering that is not of a business casual type of shoe should not be worn. Dressy flip flops are acceptable. • Jewelry: Pierced jewelry may be seen only in the earlobes and nose. Nose piercings must be only the size of a stud. Ear jewelry (cuffs, earrings, etc.) may be worn only on the earlobe. Earrings and all other jewelry should be moderate in size and in amounts as not to be a distraction. • Staff must wear business casual dress during all parent conferences and school events. “Khakis and polos aren’t the most professional, you want teachers to also look professional…” Says Coach Radar, a physical education teacher at Bradford Prep School. Coach Radar isn’t alone on her opinion. 9/10 people interviewed said, teachers shouldn’t wear the same uniform as students. The average answer was, teachers should not wear the same uniform because then it wouldn’t separate the teachers from the students and they would lose their respect. But who was the one person who disagreed? Her name Is Nichole Walker and she is a seventh grade student at Bradford Prep. Nichole thinks it would only be fair if the teacher were to wear the same uniform as students. “If it did happen I think it would be really interesting, because then they’d finally be able to take a day in our shoes ‘cause they’re always like, ‘Oh, you have to wear dress code’ when they don't have too.” Several people off the record has had the same or a similar opinion to Nichole’s as well. Other things like have been said like, “They should let us free dress, or they have to wear uniforms with us.” and “We should be able to have the acme freedom as teachers when it comes to dress codes…”. According to the National Center for Education Statistics between the years 2015 and 2016, about 22 percent of public schools required uniforms. That though, goes for students. It is unaware how many schools in the United States require their treachery wear a uniform. Do you think teachers should have to wear uniforms? How would you feel if teachers suddenly began to wear uniforms just like us? How do you think it would affect the student and staff? Stay tuned for next time, on the Bradford News.
